GUWAHATI: A local court on Saturday sent suspended Assam Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police (Border) Rounak Ali Hazarika, who was arrested on charges of having disproportionate assets, to 14-day judicial custody after rejecting his bail plea.
CM’s Special Vigilance Cell SP Rosie Kalita said, “We have sought four more days for police interrogation as he (Hazarika) didn’t cooperate with us during the investigation.
However, the court has said that police can interrogate him inside the jail. He will be produced before the court on October 30.” Hazarika was released from GMCH (Guwahati Medical College Hospital) — where he was undergoing treatment for a heart ailment. Kalita said, “The court observed that nothing has happened to him as his health parameters are normal. An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain whether he was actually ill or was he pretending. The court has written to the DGP to initiate inquiry.” Earlier in July, the IPS officer was suspended for allegedly going abroad on several occasions, since 2011, without taking necessary permission from the home department.
The release further stated that the inquiry, initiated after a case was registered against Hazarika in June, found that the suspended DIG possessed immovable and movable assets which were disproportionate to his known income during the period between 1992 to 2021 while he was posted in Bongaigaon district.
